Currently, no comprehensive survey exists to assess the impact of gender affirming vaginoplasty (GAV) on sexual function, sexual distress, sexual desire, genital self-image and sexual satisfaction despite its importance after genital surgery. The most used measures to address sexual health are the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM), and the Female Sexual Distress Scale. However, these measures fall short of addressing the unique anatomy and physiology after GAV.

The goal of this project is to determine specific aspects of sexual function that apply to transwomen after vaginoplasty and develop a tool to measure sexual function. The tool will be validated so that others may use it in order to improve evaluation of patient outcomes and support future research. The SHE+ Foundation awarded this grant in spring 2023 and looks forward to seeing outcomes from this groundbreaking study.
